Shirin Neshat was born in Qazvin, Iran, and currently lives and works in New York. Through her films and photographs, Neshat explores the position of women in Iranian society. She has had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1998), Kunsthalle Wien (2000), Walker Art Center (2002), and the Stedelijk Museum (2006), among others. Neshat has received numerous awards, including the First International Prize at the 48th Venice Biennale (1999), the Infinity Award for Visual Art from the International Center for Photography (2002), the Rockefeller Foundation Media Arts Fellowship (2008), as well as the Silver Lion, Prix La Navicella and Prix Unicef at the Venice Film Festival (2009).
