About the event

How are we to explain the persistence of "race" and racism? How might we develop an analytics of power able to grapple with the unconscious and psychological dimensions of racism and ideological subjectivity? Drawing variously on the theorizations of Frantz Fanon, historical narrative material, and interviews, social psychologist Derek Hook will ask what states of imagined embodiment underlie racist discourse. He will also encourage debate on the topic of the ethical utilization of images as means of disrupting more sanitized retrievals of the apartheid past.
