Barbara Epler started working at New Directions in 1984, and is now the president and publisher. She has been lucky to work with terrific colleagues and to work with writers such as W.G. Sebald, Roberto Bolaño, Laszlo Krasznahorkhai , César Aira, Inger Christensen, Yoel Hoffmann, John Keene, Muriel Spark,Yoko Tawada, Eka Kurniawan, and Clarice Lispector, as well as the poets Susan Howe, Michael Palmer, and Bernadette Mayer. Independent since 1936, New Directions is a for-profit press that brings out about 35 new books a year and maintains more than 1,300 titles on its backlist.
