Jan Heller Levi’s third collection of poems, Orphan, was published in 2014 by Alice James Books. She is the editor of A Muriel Rukeyser Reader, served as consulting editor for the new edition of The Collected Poems of Muriel Rukeyser, and is currently co-writing, with Christoph Keller, the biography of Rukeyser, which will be published by Knopf.

Levi took a workshop with June Jordan in the early 80s, and the two became friends. She is, with Sara Miles, co-literary executor of the June M. Jordan Literary Estate. Together, the two women edited Directed by Desire: The Collected Poems of June Jordan, published by Copper Canyon Press in 2005. Levi is currently completing, with Christoph Keller, The June Jordan Reader, a selection of Jordan’s poetry, essays, lectures, journalism, interviews, including a “correspondence poem” with Adrienne Rich that has never been published in book form.

Levi was a member of the advisory board of The Language of Conservation, a Poet’s House program dedicated to deepening public awareness of environmental issues through poetry, and is member of the artists board of the writers and artists’ colony Yaddo, where she is working on programs to increase access for the disabled to that distinguished, but “architecturally-challenged” organization. She is also a supporter of Still Waters in a Storm, literacy program for children living below the poverty line in Bushwick, Brooklyn. She has been a member of the Faculty of Hunter College since 2001, where she teaches creative writing.
