Victor Hernández Cruz was born in Puerto Rico and came to New York with his family in the early fifties; he grew up on the Lower East Side, attended Benjamin Franklin High School in East Harlem and later lived on 104th street in East Harlem. He has published extensively in the U.S. and his work has been translated into French, Dutch, Greek, Turkish, Japanese and Chinese. He has performed in Latin America, North Africa, Jordan, Spain, France, Germany, Holland, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Colombia and throughout the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. He now lives in Morocco and writes poems, stories, and essays in both Spanish and English. Beneath the Spanish is his sixth book with Coffee House Press.
