Diva Martinez was born in Havana, Cuba in 1994 and moved to the United States in 1999 alongside her parents and grandmother. Due to the family’s opposition of the Castro Regime of the time, they were designated political refugees which allowed them the freedom to leave Cuba for a better life in America.

Since childhood, Diva has been fascinated with the act of making and creating. That fascination eventually turned into a passion for the camera and photography, and at 15 years old she received her first camera. Since then, she has made it her life’s effort to understand the camera and how light works. In 2013, after graduating high school in Miami she went on to study at Miami Dade College where she took her first photography courses. After two semesters, Diva embarked on a journey in Orlando, Florida where she worked for The Walt Disney Company for two years.

After a trip to New York City in 2016, Diva made the choice to make a permanent move. Landing in New York City in 2017, she began studying Commercial Photography at CUNY LaGuardia Community College.

At LaGuardia she took an introductory video production class which cemented her interest in filmmaking. Diva is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in FIlm Production and TV & Radio from Brooklyn College.

Diva’sartistic work takes on a multimedia form as she explores the intricacies of what it means to be an artist. Working tactically by using whatever resources are at her disposal she is able to join different skills acquired throughout life in order to work experimentally. Her experimental video work consists of merging techniques like video feedback, synthesis, andthe remixing and appropriation of both archival footage and found media.
